- Date: 1994-8
- Provider: University of Manchester
- Location: Manchester, UK
- Qualification: 2:1 (upper second)
The Science of Life
The degree was composed of modules that ranged from more traditional subjects (such as genetics, microbiology, ecology and botany), through more recent disciplines (e.g. mathematical complexity and biorhythms), and on to the philosophy of science (e.g. the nature of scientific enquiry and the history of the concept of evolution).
Research Placement
The degree included a 10 month placement at the Horticulture & Food Research Institute of New Zealand in Auckland, New Zealand, improving computerised systems for plant disease prediction.
Project and Dissertation
My final-year project was to create an educational package for primary schoolchildren about ecosystems and to teach the package at a local school.
My final-year dissertation concerned the importance of mutualism (i.e. cooperation) between species in ecosystems and how it is often overlooked in favour of competition.
Mutualistic Biodiversity Networks dissertation (PDF document)Biology and Beyond
Although I no longer work in the field of biology, I gained much from the discipline of the degree and the logical scientific method. My research into ecology remains an insight into both social dynamics and the interrelationship of objects in programming.
